engaged: Misti + Jason

Saturday, February 20, 2010

i love engagements. it's so fun meeting new people and learning a little bit about another couples love story. meet Misti and Jason: Misti is a dental hygienist, Jason was a patient!

this still makes me giggle. the idea of Jason, mouth wide, Misti suctioning all the gunk, sparks flying.

between them they are the proud parents of 3 lovely children.

a home full of love and laughter.

can't wait for the big day! congratulations!

i am so thrilled to have met this adorable couple! how lucky am i that they chose ME to photograph their wedding in May.

okay, i have to be honest. meeting new clients stresses me out a little. i worry they won't like me, we won't gel. but meeting Sara and Rudy, i just knew they're engagement session would be beautiful.

i still need to get the rest of their sweet love story. so far, i know they met in college. Rudy noticed Sara right off the bat....

but she made him work for it. this is where i need some of the facts filled in. i'm not sure how he finally won her over, but if i had to guess, it must have been his infectious sense of humor.

Rudy makes Sara laugh, and that is a keyingredient to a happy relationship!

and a key ingredient to a fun engagement session!

thanks Sara and Rudy, for making my job so easy! i can't wait for your big day!

Sarah was once my sister in all things girl. her two daughters are very close in age with Anna and Madeline. but just very recently, she bucked the trend and had herself a very cute little son! (okay, so this next pic isn't a good representation of this sweet little boy, but i can't stop laughing about it, i feel like he was saying, "leave me alone!" after all the posing and picture taking. and there is something funny about the way he may be trying to gesture to me with his finger....)it's always great when people have wonderful taste, and you can just come into their home and find props galore! i also love doing follow-ups, won't he look super cute sitting up on that side board at a year?
so, a while back i implored people to help me be more objective about photography by offering themselves up as subjects. it's been so fun, but hasn't helped. why? because i fall in love with everyone i photograph, and every image captures something sweet and wonderful about them. here's a great example:
i know this shot is blurry, i remember taking it. knowing he had thrown his head back just when i pressed the shutter. but the memory of that sweet yawn gets me everytime i see this image, and i just love it.
new moms are always a littel wary of being in the photos with newborns. i've been there. i totally get that. so, i'm sure not to capture anything but the sweet love of mother and son.

i need a redo on this series with the chair. he was so over me by then! but isn't the quilt the greatest. Sarah is lucky to have a talented mother who made this beauty. (and mother-in-law, who crafted some fabulous crib bedding!)
big sisters, they were so sweet and gentle with the baby. it's so fun to watch a family grow, and feel that strange familiarity making it hard to remember when that darling little baby wasn't a part of your life!

congratulations! he is a doll!

did i mention that there was a shower?

so, there may be nothing so gratifying as your good friends having even better friends. let me explain, i feel deeply satisfied knowing that my dear friends are well taken care of, even when i am unable to be a part of their daily life. (sort of like when your kids have kind teachers.) Chelsea has always surrounded herself with dear sweet women, who love her as much as i do. (who wouldn't!) many of those women gathered together to host a simply lovely, and lovING baby shower. the beauty of the details was outdone by the sentiments shared. thank you Jamie, et al, for the wonderful time, and the assurance that my sweet Chelsea is so adored!

make new friends, but keep the old {los angeles maternity portraits}

"one is silver, but the other's gold!"

my mother and grandmother were both fond of this song while i was growing up. it has a catchy tune, and has popped into my head over the years, but especially rings especially true when i think of this particular girl. how lucky was i to grow up around the corner from such a sparkling ray of sunshine. Chelsea and i have been friends for as long as i can remember. from pre-school to high school, through college, careers, and on into motherhood. i could scan my little heart out if i had the time, but for now, i'm moving on.

this fabulous friend of mine has always been there. every good time, every broken heart, every dream! we are both big dreamers, the creative types. i will never forget the big "re-decorating" project in her room in high school. it was FAB! i was jealous. (like my mom would ever let me change the meticulously thought out Laura Ashley wonderland i shared with my sister.) Chels, tell me you remember the iridescent paper bubble curtains?

well, her love of design has taken her to a whole new level. she and her amazing little company Sugar Paper, are responsible for the most important stationary in my life. wedding invites, and all 3 baby announcements! have i mentioned that i am a lucky girl to have a friend like this! as she takes her first steps into mommyhood, i begged her to let me document it with my camera. lucky (again for me) she agreed!

now, no pregnant woman, no matter how cute she is, wants to be photographed. but i'm a firm believer in maternity shots. it's one of those times you look back on fondly, no matter how enormous you feel at the time. and despite how she might feel, i think you'll agree this is one pretty momma!

maternity portraitsChelsea and i were both child models together, and if you ask me, she's still got it!

maternity portraits Chels, though your room in high school was amazing, your design skills have only improved with time. the house is amazing, and the nursery to die for!

this little boy may not fully appreciate all the beautiful details you've lovingly chosen for his room, but i sure do!

up there to the left, is basically how i see my childhood friend in mind's eye. this silhouette blends perfectly with all the letterpress goodness on this wall.

maternity portraits i can just see you tying each of these little bows, enjoy them, they may never look this good again!

maternity portraitsit's so fun to see teeny tiny clothes. my advice is to put your child in the things you love every day until they outgrow them - it happens so fast!

maternity portraits booties! gotta love them!
maternity portraitsmaternity portraits i love sharing childhood favorites with my children, and i know this little man will feast on these classics as well. the addition of Happy the dwarf made me smile, Chelsea said she would have chosen Sleepy, both represent good attributes in a baby!
maternity portraits dear little baby boy,

you are already loved beyond words! what a lucky child you are to have such sweet, loving, successful, inspiring parents. (i love that i can say i was there for their first date!) treat them kindly, they are among Life's greatest people. you will go far if you let them lead you. of course i fully expect you to give them a hard time once in a while, but in the end, defer to their good judgement. please bring your mom to visit me, as we need a little boy around once in a while. i can't wait to meet you.

love,
B
ps: dear Chelsea, i love you!
